Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Kolkata police have arrested 59-year-old businessman Kirti Kumar Mehta on charges of rape after a woman lodged a complaint against him. The alleged incident occurred on March 7 at Samilton Hotel in Bhawanipur, where the victim claimed Mehta forcibly assaulted her in Room No. 503 after 8 PM. According to the FIR, he also threatened her with severe consequences if she spoke out. Following the complaint, police took swift action and arrested Mehta from his residence at 41 Elgin Road, Neelkamal Apartment.
Investigators have collected CCTV footage from the hotel and nearby areas while securing electronic records related to the accused. The forensic team has examined the crime scene, and medical examinations of the victim have been conducted. Officers are also recording statements from hotel staff and other potential witnesses to corroborate the allegations. Police sources confirmed that Mehta had stayed at the hotel multiple times in the past, and they are verifying if he has been involved in similar incidents.
Mehta has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rape and criminal intimidation. He is expected to be produced in court soon, where the police may seek his custody for further investigation. Officials are also looking into whether the accused had prior complaints against him. The investigation remains ongoing.
